Biology Unit 4 - Health matters
What do we get sick? We know that coughs and sneezes spread diseases but in this unit students will look in detail at the factors that increase our risk of catching a communicable disease and also how our lifestyles can affect our health.
Students will build on their understanding of micro-organisms, looking at the spread and control of; viruses such as measles, HIV and TMV; bacterial diseases including salmonella; and fungal diseases in plants.
Human beings are not the only organisms to get sick, students will look at how we can detect diseases in plants and what types of pathogens cause plant diseases.
Finally students will look at how we can treat the symptoms of disease, how we can use vaccination to prevent disease and how we develop new drugs.
