Physics Unit 4 - Atomic Structure
In year 9 students will have learnt about electrons, protons and neutrons. In this unit they look at how these subatomic particles can be used to define an individual element and how the numbers of these subatomic particles can change during chemical reactions and radioactive decay. They will also learn about the development of ideas for the structure of the atom and how Britains scientists played a key role in moving our understanding forward.
Students will review their understanding of the law of conservation of mass in reactions before applying the same principles to nuclear reactions. They will learn how to write balanced nuclear equations and how to determine the half life of a radioactive material.
